Learn about robotic GYN surgery at Women’s Health Day

Women can also take advantage of free screenings, information booths, door prizes, refreshments and more

Obstetrician/gynecologist Dr. Rana Khalek with Affinity Physicians for Women specializes in da Vinci robotic surgery.

A new year is upon us and Tift Regional Health System (TRHS) wants to help women make a commitment to a healthier life with the annual Women’s Health Day on Saturday, Jan. 21, 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at the Tift Regional Community Events Center in Tifton.  The event will include free screenings from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., information booths and a seminar on robotic surgery at 10:00 a.m. presented by obstetrician/gynecologist Rana Khalek, M.D. with Affinity Physicians for Women.

Dr. Khalek will discuss the benefits of da Vinci robotic surgery for women, a service available at Tift Regional Medical Center which offers minimally-invasive treatment of certain conditions such as myomectomy, endometriosis, pelvic organ prolapse, ovarian masses and more.  Dr. Khalek has specialized training in this area.  A working, full-scale model of the robotic system will also be on display at the event.

The da Vinci system is a sophisticated robotic platform designed to expand the surgeon’s capabilities.  Seated comfortably at the da Vinci console, surgeons are able to become steadier with hand movements through the use of precision instruments attached to robotic arms.  Advantages for surgeons include improved ergonomics, 3D visualization and enhanced accuracy.  Dr. Khalek said the greater benefits are for patients.

“Robotic surgery means more precision, smaller incisions, less pain and a faster recovery time,” said Dr. Khalek.  “Many women are hesitant to take the time needed for gynecological surgery because they are busy with their careers and taking care of the rest of the family.  With da Vinci robotic surgery, women can have a quicker return to normal activities.”

Dr. Khalek earned her medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine in the West Indies. She completed her obstetrical/gynecological residency and robotic surgery training at the Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, N.J. Dr. Khalek is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology. She and her husband, Dr. Bishara D. Baddour, joined Dr. Shannon Price at Affinity Physicians for Women in September.   Affinity Physicians for Women is located in Tifton at 39 Kent Road, Suite 1.  New patients are being accepted.  To make an appointment with Dr. Khalek or another provider, call 229-391-4130.

“We encourage all women to come to the Women’s Health Day and take advantage of the free screenings and health information,” said Dr. Khalek.

The free screenings will include blood pressure, blood sugar and lipid panels from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.  For efficiency, appointments are required for the screenings.  To make an appointment, call 229-353-6316.  Screening appointment slots are limited and are available on a first-call, first-serve basis.

Women’s Health Day will also feature various vendors and information booths on available health resources in the community.  There will also be door prizes and complimentary refreshments.
