The Wound Care and Hyperbaric Clinic at Tift Regional Medical Center (TRMC), a member of the Healogics network, is helping raise awareness of chronic wounds. The fourth annual Wound Care Awareness Week is June 5 through June 9.

One of nearly 800 Healogics-managed centers, the TRMC Wound Care and Hyperbaric Clinic offers advanced therapies to patients suffering from chronic wounds.  Program Directors across the nation will dedicate the entire week to educating physicians, patients and the general public about the chronic wound epidemic and the advanced wound care solutions.

It is estimated that chronic wounds affect 6.7 million people in the U.S. and the incidence is rising, fueled by an aging population and increasing rates of diseases and conditions such as diabetes, obesity and the late effects of radiation therapy.  If left untreated, chronic wounds can lead to diminished quality of life and possibly amputation of the affected limb.

“We see patients living with non-healing wounds for a prolonged amount of time due to the lack of awareness of advanced wound care options,” said D. Scott Covington, MD, FACS, Chief Medical Director for Healogics. “We work to educate community physicians about which of their patients can benefit from advanced wound care, and then provide coordinated care to heal that patient’s wounds.”

The TRMC Wound Care and Hyperbaric Clinic recently celebrated the receipt of the Robert A. Warriner III Center of Excellence Award, which was awarded to the clinic by Healogics. The clinic achieved outstanding clinical outcomes for 24 consecutive months, including patient satisfaction higher than 92 percent, and a minimum healing rate of at least 91 percent within 30 median days to heal. In addition to the Center of Excellence Award, the clinic also was awarded President’s Circle Honors, which places the clinic in the top 15 percent of all Healogics network wound care facilities nationwide.

“We are very pleased to have been awarded these recognitions by Healogics. I would like to thank our nursing staff in particular for their long hours of very challenging and taxing work. I am honored to work with an exceptional team, which not only consists of nurses but also our program director, nurse coordinator, and office coordinator. They make each day a success with their special expertise and compassionate patient care. It is my privilege to recognize them during Wound Care Awareness Week,” states Dr. Kent Burton, Medical Director of the TRMC Wound Care and Hyperbaric Clinic.
