Minimally-invasive surgery: small incisions, quick recovery times
The Surgery Center offers a host of advanced, minimally-invasive procedures that utilize a telescope-like instrument which is inserted in a small incision called a laparoscope, endoscope or arthroscope. The scope is connected to a tiny video camera, which projects a view of the operative site on video monitors in the operating room. The surgeon observes the video monitors to guide precision surgical instruments through another small incision to perform the operation.
Patients who undergo a minimally-invasive procedure may realize such benefits as reduced postoperative pain, shorter hospital stays, less scarring and a quicker return to daily activities. Minimally-invasive surgeries at Tift Regional Medical Center include:
- Endovascular procedures: the treatment of vascular disease from within the blood vessel (such as hardened arteries in the leg or other area).
- Laparoscopic cholecystectomy: minimally-invasive gallbladder removal.
- Sentinal node and Mammotone inserts: minimally-invasive breast biopsies.
- Vagal nerve stimulator insertion: for controlling epileptic seizures.
- Orthopedic arthroscopic procedures: for the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders of the knee, ankle, shoulder, elbow and carpal tunnel
- Diagnostic and therapeutic laparoscopy.
- Supracervical hysterectomies.
- Laparoscopic Uternine Nerve Abalation (LUNA): for treating chronic pelvic pain.
- Thermal ablation: for dysfunctional uterine bleeding (as an alternative to a hysterectomy).
- Brachytherapy: for prostate and cervical cancer.
- Various ophthalmologic and endoscopic sinus surgeries.
